Assistant Speech and Language Therapist

About the role:

SEND & Sensory is looking for an enthusiastic Assistant Speech and Language Therapist to join our specialist multidisciplinary Autism service.

This is an excellent development opportunity for someone who has experience working with children with additional needs and wishes to progress towards becoming an HCPC Registered Speech and Language Therapist in the future. You will receive regular clinical supervision, structured training and mentoring from experienced Speech and Language Therapists while developing your clinical knowledge and practical skills.

You will work primarily with autistic children on a one-to-one basis, supporting the delivery of evidence-based communication interventions and assisting Speech and Language Therapists with assessments, therapy programmes and clinical documentation.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Working Pattern

  • Wednesday to Friday: 11:00am – 7:00pm
  • Saturday & Sunday: 9:00am – 5:00pm
  • Monday & Tuesday: Days off

 

Location: Bromley and Kilburn, London

Your responsibilities will include:

Working under the supervision of a Speech and Language Therapist, you will:

  • Deliver one-to-one communication programmes designed by the supervising Speech and Language Therapist
  • Support autistic children and children with additional communication needs to achieve their therapy goals.
  • Assist with speech, language and communication assessments using both standardised and informal assessment tools under supervision.
  • Analyse assessment findings alongside the supervising Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Assist in producing high-quality written reports and therapy documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with families, schools and other professionals.
  • Create and maintain therapy resources and communication materials.
  • Participate in clinically related administration.
  • Attend multidisciplinary team meetings, clinical supervision and service development meetings.
  • Participate in staff training and contribute to the ongoing development of the clinical team.
  • Contribute to audits, quality improvement initiatives and research projects.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records in accordance with professional and organisational standards.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Experience working with children in a Speech and Language Therapy, education, SEND, psychology, ABA or related setting.
  • Experience working directly with autistic children.
  • A good understanding of Autism and neurodiversity-affirming practice.
  • Knowledge of a range of communication approaches.
  • Knowledge of SCERTS and ABA principles or willingness to undertake training.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Excellent report-writing and literacy skills.
  • Strong IT skills and confidence using Microsoft Office and specialist communication software where appropriate.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills.
  • A willingness to learn, accept feedback and develop professionally.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

What you will get:

  • £27,000–£29,000 salary, depending on experience and skills.
  • A structured development pathway towards becoming a Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Equivalent of 7½ weeks annual leave (including Bank Holidays), taken during:
    • One week at Easter.
    • The whole month of August.
    • Two weeks over the Christmas period.
  • £500 annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) budget.
