At SEND & Sensory, we believe that every child deserves a voice—regardless of their verbal ability. Through our AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) support, we help schools, trusts, and local authorities identify, implement, and maintain the most suitable communication tools for pupils with complex communication needs.
From low-tech solutions such as symbol boards and PECS to high-tech devices and communication apps, we work closely with staff and families to embed AAC systems into everyday routines—empowering children to express themselves, make choices, and engage in learning with confidence.
AAC refers to the tools and strategies used to support or replace spoken communication. It may include:
Low-tech systems: visual timetables, PECS, communication boards
Mid-tech tools: single-message devices, switch-based systems
High-tech systems: speech-generating devices (e.g., iPads with communication apps)
AAC can be temporary or long-term and should always be personalised to the pupil’s needs, abilities, and preferences.
Our Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) provide end-to-end support for AAC implementation, including:
Assessment of a pupil’s communication profile and AAC suitability
Recommendation of appropriate systems (low, mid, or high tech)
Support in acquiring devices or materials
Staff training on how to model and use AAC consistently
Integration of AAC into learning, play, and everyday routines
Monitoring usage, reviewing impact, and updating strategies over time
We ensure that AAC is not treated as an ‘add-on’—but as a central part of the pupil’s voice, rights, and educational access.
AAC is suitable for pupils with limited or no speech, or for those whose speech is unclear or inconsistent due to conditions like autism, cerebral palsy, or developmental delay.
